چکیده

A quantitative study has been made of the effects of nerve growth factor (NGF), isolated from the venom of Vipera russelli, on the growth of dispersed cells from the sensory ganglia of the embryonic chick. The main effects were to increase the viability of the sensory neurons in culture and to promote the regeneration of nerve fibres. In the presence of NGF a higher proportion of neurons produced fibres and the fibres were longer and slightly more branched than in control cultures. The number of fibres produced per neuron was unaltered. Supporting cells were unaffected by the presence of NGF. No stimulation of mitotic activity among either type of cell was observed. It is concluded that, under the stated conditions, NGF does not promote the differentiation of immature cells but acts, both in a maintenance and a stimulatory capacity, only on those cells recognizable as neurons.

Effects of nerve growth factor from the venon of Vipera russelli on sensory and sympathetic ganglia from the embryonic chick in culture.

Sensory and sympathetic ganglia of embryonic chick were cultured in media in which no growth of fibres occurred, and then transferred to culture conditions favouring the growth of fibres. The effects on fibre outgrowth of having NGF in neither, one or both media were examined quantitatively. It was concluded that the main effect of NGF, under these conditions, is to maintain the viability of th...

Purification and metabolic effects of a nerve growth-promoting protein from snake venom.

A factor which specifically stimulates the growth of sensory and sympathetic nerve cells has been under investigation in this laboratory for a number of years. The growth stimulation is demonstrable both in tissue culture, on isolated nerve ganglia, and in the living chick embryo. The factor was originally discovered in certain mouse sarcomas (2-5) and the biological activity was found to resid...

Cytotoxic Effect of Iranian Vipera Lebetina snake Venom on HUVEC Cells

Objective: Envenomation by heamotoxic snakes constituted a critical health occurrence in the world. Bleeding is the most sever consequence following snake bite with viperid and crothalid snakes. It is believed that the degradation of vascular membrane caused hemorrhage; in contrast, some suggested that direct cytotoxicity has role in endothelial cell disturbances. This study was to evaluate the...

Effects of Black Scorpion Androctonus crasicuda Venom on Striated Muscle Preparation in vitro.

Effects of venom from black scorpion Androctonus crasicuda (AC) were determined on isolated chick biventer cervices nerve-muscle and mouse hemidiaphragm preparations using twitch tension method. The isolated nerves were stimulated by electrical stimulator and response to each stimulus was recorded. The venom mainly acted prejunctionally to facilitate neuromuscular activity due to an increase in...
